Pregnant Skydiver Survives Plunge-- Tue Dec 13, 6:40 PM ET
SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - Pregnant skydiver Shayna Richardson has survived a face-first plunge into the ground.
Richardson, 21, of Joplin, Mo., was making her first solo jump in Siloam Springs, Ark., on Oct. 9 when her main parachute failed and her reserve chute didn't fully deploy.
Richardson was falling at about 50 mph when she hit face first in a parking lot. Badly injured, but alive, Richardson spent 16 days in a hospital.
"I heard a snap and I started spinning and I didn't know why. I didn't know what to do to fix it. I didn't know how to make it stop," Richardson told Fort Smith, Ark., television station KFSM.
She cut away her primary chute so her reserve could deploy.
"It's called your guaranteed open. That's what everyone refers to it as," Richardson said.
But the reserve didn't open all the way.
"To have a malfunctioning reserve is one in a million. It just doesn't happen," Richardson said.
She spun out of control, heading straight for the asphalt of a parking lot below.
"At the end I said, 'I'm going to die. I'm going to hit the ground. I'm going to die,'" she said. "I don't remember it. I don't remember hitting the ground. I don't remember the impact or anything that came with it."
She landed face first.
"In the hit, I egg shelled my entire face. Everything got egg shelled. I broke my pelvis in two places and I broke my leg," Richardson said.
Rescuers got her to a hospital in Fayetteville where Richardson underwent surgery.
"I went into the first surgery where they cut me from ear to ear and they cut my face down and they took out all the fractured egg-shelled bones and put in steel plates," Richardson said.
During treatment, doctors found that Richardson was pregnant, which was a surprise to her.
She said she would not have jumped had she known she was pregnant.
"To hit the ground belly first — that's dangerous. I mean at any stage of pregnancy that's dangerous. That's not something you want to do let alone at 50 miles per hour," Richardson said.
Four surgeries and two months later, Richardson said she and her fetus are doing fine.
"Just this last week we went and saw the doctor and we've got arms, we've got legs. We've got a full face. The baby is moving around just fine. The heart rate looks good. So not only did God save me but he spared this baby," Richardson said.
Richardson has 15 steel plates in her face and lost six teeth. Her fall was videotaped and Richardson said she was able to watch it, without qualms.
"I wanted to watch it," said Richardson. "And the whole reason I'm comfortable with watching it because I know how it ends."
Richardson said her due date is June 25. She said she plans to make her next parachute jump in August.

it was nice to spend a night dressed up with people who i love. i (kind of) learned how to dance, talked to people, laughed a lot, traveled in style, and had a good time.

i love kelsey and her family. they are amazing.
i had such a fun time tonight doing absolutely nothing but getting attacked by chairs and going through kelsey's clothes (and finding an amazing sweateer to wear that i hope she will soon post pictures of) and talking to her family.
her dad's a cal alum, so he knows all the hotspots. like evans, 10th floor. the math lounge.
sweet.
i also got chandalier earrings that everyoneandhermom has but i love them so much. and will probably wear them every day from now on.
it's the weeeeekend. this week went really quickly. it's nice when it's like that.
i hope it stays warm out. i could get used to this.

i am ridiculously happy right now. it's really nice.
last night and today were both amazing. actually, this whole week has been great so far. i sound like such a cliche, i know, but i love having such wonderful people in my life. my friends, shany, the people i work with, my sister, they're all awesome.
i just talked to my coach next year about my ankle, and i am so relieved. i can't believe i'm going to such a completely awesome place next year with people who i know care about me and will really look out for me. it's going to be such an experience and i can't wait.
my mom was an instant winner at commerce. she got a little card in her easter egg and redeemed it today for two loopy pencils and an activity book. pretty sweet.
my sister can do the entire napoleon dynamite dance. it's awesome.
this spring break has been going so well so far. and today was lovely out. i was craving going for a run.
i am so short on money, it's ridiculous. when we saw 'ring2', scott paid for my ticket with the quarters i gave him because i didn't want to be obnoxious and he didn't care. the woman gave him the dirtiest look. the 'ring2' was basically the same movie as the original. waste of 18 quarters i think.
i hope the rest of this week is this nice.

why hullo.
i'm in computer programming. this is really the only time i get to update/actually read my friends list now.
yesterday was an horribly long day, but it ended nicely. i went to practice and then work after school and then hung out with shany afterwards. my eye like swelled shut and now it's gross and i look like some shady old man who keeps winking. one of my eyes looks smaller than the other too. it's tres sexy.
the time until spring break will pass as slowly as it can, i'm sure. i'm kind of sick of this week already. the weather is nice though, which is awesome. kind of cold, but sunny.
hopefully no more snow. . .
my day kind of goes downhill after this. until english anyway.
and then practice, but i'm kind of psyched to get home early-ish today. maybe i'll go to the gym.
random thoughts.
it's kind of funny how this has turned into one of my favorite classes.
the bell's going to ring so i'm done.

i had a nice time last night. jekyll and hyde was awesome. jonathan schwartz is the only person i know who can sing a duet with himself. it was pretty amazing. everything just went together really well and the set looked amazing. congratulations to all involved, you did a really great job.

it baffles me how some people can know they upset and offended someone and just not care. just go on doing whatever and really make no effort to resolve anything.
not that i really want to have anything to do with you anymore anyway. but it still is something i really don't get.
this weekend better be awesome.
do you think it's too late to drop a class? it kind of crushes me.
my ankle's been hurting a lot.
tomorrow i think i'm seeing the ring. i also think i might cry. i'm still not over the grudge. oh me oh my.

last night was pretty awesome.
i went out to dinner with emms at Jose's Mexican Cantina (formerly Fabio's Mexican Cantina, awesome). it was really fun to be able to sit and chat and catch up, even though i think our waiter was just waiting to kick us out since there were only like two people in the restaurant anyway.
then we drove about 380274 miles to the nearest 24-hour dunkin donuts, where they gave us free donuts. i was so jittery on all the caffine forever last night.
i went to berkeley this morning to swim. it was really nice to see people again.
i'm soooo excited that it's sunny out. even if it is still rather cold, it's so much nicer than all this cloudy weather and snow we've been having.
i never know how to end these updates, so i think i'm just going to awkwardly stop typing.
